Since 2010 the Postgraduate Programs in Health Administration and the Public Health Institute of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia; have made a summary about the participation in the International Health Systems Congresses that we held biennially. This academic space has been conducive to the meeting of researchers, civil society, teachers, students, politicians, decision makers and technicians from all places of the country and the world’s media, interests and the communication media.
In the first International Congress of 2010: “Towards a new health system in Colombia?” researchers from different regions of Colombia and several countries of the Americas and Europe reflected on the political, social and economic conditions resulting from the reform of the Colombian health system and its implications in terms of welfare, equity and the future of the system.
Consistent with these concerns, Congress returns, two years later, on health systems, but this time it deepens the relationship between “Citizenship and Financing”. For this, it expands the participation of speakers from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, also maintaining a broad national representation. The purpose of this Congress was to analyze, deliberate and construct possible options for financing and allocation of resources in the context of the current economic crisis and in favor of policies to overcome the economic crisis that threatens the possibilities of building universal, equitable, sustainable and participatory health systems.
The third Congress, for its part, the organizing group of the base, the registration of a perfect harmony between the interests and concerns of the postgraduate Programs in Health Administration of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, in conjunction with the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology, the Master’s Degree in Public Health and the Specialization in Health Administration of the University, Cali headquarters; emphasizing, this time, in the analysis of the relationships between Equity, Quality and Health services. Dialogue and reflection are focused on the current situation of these issues in health systems in general, and in a way, their dynamics in the general system of social security in health in Colombia.
Finally, and in response to a transcendental situation in the history of Colombia, the IV International Congress of Health Systems and the IV National Conference on Public Health focused two years ago on the construction of “Health for Peace”. On that occasion it was held in the context of the peace dialogues between the Colombian government and the insurgencies of the FARC-EP and the ELN, which prelude to be the most important event in recent decades due to its impact on economic, political, social and cultural of the country.
